Heidi's REAL LIFE Homeschooling

With the permission of Heidi St. John, I want to share my notes from one of the workshops she taught when she was here. Using "real life" as an acrostic, here is some of what we learned.

R - Remember the goal of homeschooling. It's not a well-trained mind but a well-trained heart.

E - Expect opposition: spiritual (1 Peter 5:8), family, friends, children (your own!).

A - Adjust for life. Be flexible or burn out. Child training trumps the ABC's every day.

L - Listen: for the Lord (Joshua 24:15), to your husband, to your children, to godly counsel.

L - Let go of legalism. Don't add to God's word (in your expectations of others), focus on the heart, beware of becoming self-righteous. Homeschooling is NOT the answer -- Jesus Christ is the answer! But homeschooling in the hands of godly parents is a great tool.

I - Instill a kingdom perspective. Aim (for their future) asking, "where does God want my child to go?" (Psalm 127:4) Spend more time in God's word and less time in other books. Education IS discipleship... a child will be like his teacher, so we (as teacher) must be like Jesus.

F - Find real friends... friends who are willing to bear with you.

E - Enjoy the journey. You children will remember HOW you taught them more than WHAT you taught them.
