Frequently Asked Questions

(FAQs) for First Class Homeschool Ministries and Local Co-ops

What is a "cooperative"? A cooperative, or "co-op", is a collaborative organization that is jointly staffed by all of our members.  At FCHM, we count on all of our members to contribute their time, energy and talents by helping implement our programs, events and activities. The co-op has a Board of Directors who oversee the ministry and offer help and support where needed.

Does my membership cover the entire family? Yes, and for an entire year (August to August)

Are parents required to teach at First Class? No, but they are required to stay on campus and will be assigned a .job.  somewhere during class hours. Of course, we strongly encourage parents to teach. It's what makes Monday School able to offer so much!

Does First Class have a statement of Faith? Yes, please see the parent handbook or FCHM.s website, http://www.fchm.org/.  FCHM is a non-denominational Christian ministry.

What are the costs involved in First Class?   Annual membership to First Class Homeschool Ministires:  $22-27; Annual membership to the local Sandpoint co-op:  $20.  Individual Class Tuition:  $3(minimum) per child per semester minimum.  A supply fee may be added by the teacher.

When does the co-op Class Day operate? Typically, We have scheduled two 10-week semesters.  One in the fall (September - November) and another in the early spring (February to April).

How do I get in touch with a co-op coordinator? See the contact sheet, parent handbook or our website.  You will find specific categories to help you know who to direct your questions or comments to. We always want to hear new ideas and appreciate your input!

What should I do if I can't afford to participate?  First Class has funds set aside for scholarships. Please get in touch with our treasurer to obtain a scholarship application.

I am interested in teaching.  How do I get a Teacher Application?  Teacher applications are mailed out in advance of each semester. If you are not on our mailing list, you may obtain one by calling your local Co-op Coordinator, or downloading it off our website.

Will my child(ren) get into the classes they signed up for?  Our parents who volunteer to teach are very valuable to us.  Their only perq is that they get to sign up for classes an hour before the rest of the co-op.  Classes do tend to fill up quickly so we advise you to arrive early.  We highly recommend that every student list two class choices per block of classes. If the child.s first choice is not available, they will be assigned their second choice and so on.

What types of events and activities are available through First Class?  Our activities and events are as varied as our members. In the past, members have enjoyed field trips, Christmas parties, and community service days.

How can I find out when and where FCHM activities are? Information regarding our events, activities, opportunities, and news is disseminated through FC's private, Members Only website and email lists.  Mailings are also sent out, and newsletters, according to each individual co-op ministry.
