First Class Folsom/EDHs-For His Children Classes Our Friday School classes will be at Oak Hills Church in Folsom (1100 Blue Ravine Rd.) and we will start promptly at 9:00am with Chapel. Chapel includes a worship time, a short devotion and announcements for everyone. After Chapel the children and parents are dismissed for their first class (9:30 - 10:30). The second hour class will follow (10:30 - 11:30). 7 C's of History- The 7 C's will help you remember the big events which have affected and will affect the history of the universe. Learn to defend your faith while having fun with experiments, stories, crafts, songs, and food. A Bug's Life - This class is designed to open our eyes and see the world of beautiful and remarkable creatures living right in our back yards. We will learn about the behavior, food-gathering, defenses, anatomy and many other interesting habits these little creatures. A Hope Chest For Today's Girl - This is a class designed to encourage today's girl to save, collect and appreciate things from the past while making and creating new items useful for their future. Some days will be discussion oriented while others will be more "hands on." Advanced Woodworking - A brief introduction into tools and fasteners. Students will learn safety while constructing a footstool using a variety of power tools. Accidents can occur quickly with power tools, so parents should evaluate their child's attentiveness and ability. We will be using power tools such as table and miter saws, a router, drills, and electric sanders. Each student will learn about types of wood, tools, measuring, and cutting while building their own foot stools. This class is for mature and responsible students. Adventures in Creative Writing - With practice anyone can enjoy writing and even produce exceptional work. We'll begin with short, fun exercises to get the creative juices flowing. We'll work up to creating stories, descriptions of ourselves and even poetry! Adventures in Classics - Boys and girls who love reading will want to be in this class. We will read and discuss two or more classic adventure books, and have a lettle fun with extra-curricular activities as well. Put your brain in gear to read! Read! Read! Aerobics - Ready to shake those wiggles out? Let's get in shape and have some fun, too! We'll learn some basic aerobic moves and even work on putting together a choreographed routine. Wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes. All About Me Scrapbooking - Come and make a Notebook that is "All about Me." We will focus on some writing skills, notebooking, collage, cut and paste, coloring and a little scrapbooking. **students should be able to write at 1st grade level - or willing to try ? All American History - (blank) Amazing Oceans - This class will cover abroad overview of oceanography. The lessons will include an "Amazing Fact of the Week", a science experiment and a craft each week. American Girl Literature - We will be reading 'Josefina Learns a Lesson' (book 2 in the series). Students will be assigned reading in preparation for each class and participate in discussion with related activities including history, geography, art, language arts, biblical content. American Government -This 2-semester high school course includes a description of government, democracy, the Constitution as the basis of our government, civil liberties and civil rights, the three branches of government, the election system, and political parties. American Sign Language -Something new for all!! We will be reviewing the alphabet and popular signs. This class will be great for those just learning or forthose who took theclass last session. Homework is just a review of what they learned in class. Around the World Geography - Your child is going to embark on a trip around the world! We'll fill in our passports each week as we visit places like Brazil, Egypt, Germany, Australia, etc. Each week we will study a different country and learn about it through map activities, songs, games, food and crafts. Around the World in 80 Days -Travel with Phileas Fogg and learn about geography and world cultures described in Jules Verne's exciting novel, "Around the World in 80 Days". Students will explore England, France, Italy,Greece, Egypt, India, Singapore, China, Japan, and Ireland. Art of Cartooning - This class will provide students with basic cartooning skills. They will learn techniques they will use to create their own cartoon strip at the end of the semester. Art of Drawing Horses - (blank) Art of Many Mediums -Come create 8 masterpieces and learn about 8 artists using adifferent medium each week. Metal Working - Bend it-Hang it. Forest: Pick it-Smash it-Wear it! Art Pockets - The young children will learn various concepts through hands-on art projects. Each child's art will be compiled to make a beautiful ‘ArtPocket Book' for you to enjoy! Art with Thomas Kinkade -Learning art basics with Thomas Kinkade. Line & shape, space & proportion, tone & texture. 5 books needed (we will order them for you, first 3 books would be review from previous art class. Astronomy & Star Gazing - Basic astronomy and telescope use. Constellations, scale of theuniverse, the solar system, history of astronomy, and telescope topics will be covered. There will be a star party for interested students. Backyard Scientist -Hands on Science experiments and projects that Kids can perform. Each experiment done with things from around the house. Complete step by step instructions, questions on observations and biblical explanation of results. New Supply list each week. Ballet I/Tap I - Beginning ballet and tap. Students will need ballet and tap shoes and flexible clothing. Basic Beginning Sewing With Crafts -This is a starter/ beginning class. We will be practicing a few basic hand-sewing stitches (running stitch, overcast stitch, cross stitch, embroidery and blanket stitch) while making several fun craft sewing projects. No sewing machines will be used. Basic Cake Decorating -Icing a cake, piping borders,and making flowers are some of the things you will be learning in this class.Please bring an apron and any cake decorating tools you may have. Students will take turns bringing a cake for decorating. Basic Candy Making - Come and learn how to make candies, fudges, chocolates, marzipan, and more. Hands on! Basic German - Let's explore some basic German and learn about the country, too. Basic Guitar -Simple Chords for worship. Learn eight basic chords that will enable you to play hundreds of songs. First 4 that sign-up without a guitar, we will have one provided. MUST HAVE YOUR OWN GUITAR. Basic Physics -Physics is the science of energy and motion, and it forms the basis of engineering and technology. Beautiful Bags to Crochet -Create the bag of your choice. Choose a fancy evening bag, a casual everyday purse, a tote bag, duffle bag, backpack or even a stretch grocery bag. Find your own pattern or pick one of mine. Student needs to purchase own yarn and hook. Beginner Band - No instruments need for first class Beginning Acting -Increase students ability to communicate verbally, and physically, to think imaginatively, and to feel, and understand emotions while cooperating within a group. Beginning Bead Weaving -We will make a beautiful Victorian Ruffle Beaded Christmas ornament. It will be a nice keepsake to hand down to your children. You will need to purchase a kit from BeadsRus. Beginning Crochet - (blank) Beginning Floral Design - Beginning French -This is an introduction to French. Together we will learn French vocabulary - colors, numbers and common household objects -through games and songs Beginning Latin -Salve! Our class is aimed a young Latin scholars from grades 1-6. We'll be using Prima Latina. Beginning Poetry -Fun and easy poetry, trying to give the kids a LOVE of poetry and to see that it is great to learn. We'll practice writing some poems, learn the basics of poetry, and we'll "Memorize" some poems too! Beginning Recorder -Come learn how to play the recorder. We will also be learning basic music theory. Bring your own recorder. Beginning Sewing -You will learn basic sewing skills while making a book bag, and apron. You will need to purchase some fabric, thread, and a few notions. You must bring your own sewing machine every week. Supply lists will be handed out with class schedules. Biblical Foundation of the U.S. Constitution -In this course students will gain an understanding of the Biblical Foundation of the U.S. Constitution. Bowling -Have you ever wanted to learn how to bowl? Do you score 250 regularly? Instruction will be provided from bumpers to pro! Cost will be $3.00/week to be paid to Riverside Lanes. There will be NO purchasing of drinks or food while at Lanes. Price will be $1.50 per game per child per week. May possibly be collected weekly by Teacher and payable to Riverside Lanes. You can look forward to main dishes as well as desserts and appetizers with variations on most recipes. Be prepared to share your favorites too!!!! Career Class -This class will be visiting area professions, learning about the business they are in, how they decided what was the career for them and the education it took to achieve their goals. We will tour doctor's offices, the hospital, veterinary clinics and Chapel - for Junior High & High School Fellowship Hall (blank) Character First -Fun and interactive class learning the character traits forgiveness,truthfulness,obedience,and attentiveness through stories and songs Character Qualities -Learn biblical character qualities such as honesty, integrity, responsibility, etc. Chemistry Lab -We will provide a minimum of 31 experiments during our labs, studying matter and its changes, chemical equations, stoichiometry, atomic and molecular structure, polyatomic icons, molecular geometry, acids and bases, solutions, gas phase, kinetics, etc. Children Around the World -We will "visit" many countries around the world and find out the different foods they eat, games they play, clothes they wear and what their schooling is like. Children's Choir -Make a joyful noise with us in our children's choir. Students will learn a variety of Christian and inspirational music. Child's History of the World -We will discuss history through story form. We will begin from Ancient Egypt to about the time of Cadum the Phoenician. Some games & crafts will be used to reinforce what we have learned. Choir 1 -Learn basics of vocal training and sightsinging, as well as part singing, through vocal exercises,age appropriate choral music and praise & worship music. Students will take turns leading Mon. mornings with emphasis on worship and not performance. Choir/Music -Learning music is fun! This class will teach core principles of music and apply that to singing. Christmas Creations -A class designed to help students find creative ways to make Christmas gifts for parents, grand parents, aunts or uncles etc. No fee but each student will be required to bring supplies for each project. Cirano de Bergerac/ Literature -In this class we will be reading and talking through 'Cyrano de Bererac'. We will be listening to lectures on tape and using them to get discussions going. We will also be viewing parts of the play also. Each student will need to obtain a copy of the Civil War -This will be a hands on multi-media class on the US Civil War. With 10 years of reanacting experience, we hope to culminate this class with an authentic civil war ball. The ball not being until after session has ended. Classic Heroes -This class is designed to introduce young children to some of the "Heroes of the Past". Some of the people we will be studying in this video series are,Hellen Keller,George Washington Alexander Graham Bell,The Wright Brothers. Classroom Newspaper -We are here to learn the basics of producing a newspaper. See your name in the by line or next to your photographs! I hope to have a performance one evening or afternoon at the end of Friday School. This won't be a single play, but lots of short skits, readings, etc. on the theme. Drama & Music - We will be learning about drama and music through our preparation of a Christmas musical that we'll perform on our Family Night. All children will be learning several songs to be part of the choir and some children will be assigned acting parts. Draw Write Now -We will learn to draw step-by-step, color and add descriptive writing to our artwork. Drawing -Drawing principles with an emphasis on pencil drawing from observation. Drawing Basics -In this one year course, we will cover basic techniques of drawing, including: elements of shape and design, still life and volume drawing. Electronic Gadgets for the Mad Scientist -A continuation of the fall class. The book used in the fall class is not a requirement for this class. It is preferable but not a requirement that you have taken the fall class. Spring 2006 MV, WA 1 English from the Roots Up -Children will learn Greek & Latin roots, their meanings and explore an array of words which have those roots in them. Students must be able to use a dictionary, and they wil need 100 white index cards lined on 1 side with box, 1 red, 1 green wide marker. Evangelism and YOU! - This class will cover subjects that are foundational and focused on evangelism. Subjects will include lesson prep, how to lead a child to Christ, discipline in the classroom, etc. We will cover basic and ongoing training. Everyday Cooking -Students will learn about the basics of cooking, measuring and using a recipe in this hands on class. During the video lessons by Dave Ramsey, students actively participate by completing the Financial Peace Workbook. Firecracker Gymnastics - Learn basic tumbling and gymnastic exercises. Held at Puget Sound Gymnastics. Please dress in exercise clothing with no jewelry. Fitness - Come and learn to do some simple exercises, play games, while learning to be active each day. We will create a food pyramid and participate in the President's Fitness Challenge. Fitness & Nutrition - Participate in simple exercises and games. We will play games, sing songs, read fun books together and write. Functional Science 7th -12th - Looking at energy; electromagnetism, light, sound, heat. Hands on experiments include a telegraph to demonstrate electromagnetism, simple camera, and transition from potential to kinetic energy. Moving onto matter. Conversion of solid to liquid to gas Gadgets & Gizmos - This course will be an integrated unit based on the book The Gadget War. Students will learn about inventors and their inventions, be introduced to simple machines & build catapults. Games 101 - Fun is the name of the game. Learn the rules to new games while learning how to be a player who can win or lose with grace. Board games, cards, and dominoes. General Science - This class will follow the Apologia text, study materials and tests. Labs will be done in class. Homework will be required. God's Book of Beginnings - Genesis - Using Grapevine Bible Studies' Stickfiguring through the Bible, we will draw our way through Genesis. By reading, hearing and drawing children have a higher retention and understanding of the Bible. Guitar 101 - This basic beginner guitar class will show students how to take care of instruments, flat pick and finger pick. The goal is to learn 'Lord, I Lift Your Name On High' by the end of the course. Guts & Glory - We will look at the digestive tract of several different animals and see how that effects their diet. Gymastics - Children will be driven to Dimensions of Gymnastics during this hour. Come for a tumble and enjoy the fun of gymnastics! We will learn the balance beam, trampoline and much more! Fall 2007 MV, WA 2 Hail to the Chief - Hit the campaign trail and learn US history, geography, and government as we play the presidential election game. Hands on History/Middle Ages - This is a hands on history class using a Hands & Hearts history kit, http://www.handsandhearts.com/. Students will make authentic chainmail, a scale catapult, design their own coat of arms, we will make and play a Middle Ages boardgame, make a jeweled crown, and Hands on Math 1st - 3rd - We will do hands on math to help the students to make math connections. Health and Fitness - To instruct the students the importance of a healthy body while actively teaching skills through various and games. Active participation required. Helper Highschool - Students will be assigned rooms to assist in or help out around the co-op as assigned by Jeff. This also is required of highschool students with family members in the morning session. (Required unless teaching a class in the co-op) Helper Junior Highschool - Students will be assigned rooms to assist in or help out around the co-op as assigned by Jeff. This also is required of Junior High School students with family members in the morning session. Heritage Art - Weaving Spinning, dyeing yarn to use in a small weaving project High School Speech I: Basic Oral and Written Communication - Students will be introduced to basic communication principles. Focus will be two-fold: 1) encouraging students to be comfortable speaking in front of an audience and 2) basic speech writing skills. Speeches will be written outside of class (homework) History of Electronic Games - A continuation of the fall class. The book used in the fall class is not a requirement for this class. It is preferable but not a requirement that you have taken the fall class. History's Heroes - Through the animated video series by Nest Entertainment, students will explore the lives of many of history's heroes. They will see how not only the great moments count but how God will use even their lowest for His glory. Holiday History - (blank) Homework Room - Don't miss Friday school just because you have too much to do. Instead bring your homework, bring your i-pod, curl up in a corner and work on your school work while still being able to enjoy friends and fun classes in the other blocks.
